I am a mechanical engineer with a passion for two stroke engines. I collect OMC outboards and older
Lawn Boy mowers. I grew up with a Lawn Boy which my dad bought used and I couldn’t wait until I was
old enough until he’d let me use it. After looking through many pictures, I’ve since figured out it was a
1973 self-propelled 21 inch model with bag and electric start, but that didn’t work. It had a battery and
key switch in a housing mounted on the deck. We just turned the key on and started it with the pull cord.
Anyway, I think I must have at least 15 Lawn Boys now. Most run. I don’t have much time to get to others but
will eventually.
Some frustration with the fuel shut-off valve in a few of my mowers let to this….
Fuel Shut Off Valve Seal
This seal is part of Lawn Boy kit part number 681818. It seals the fuel shut off valve on many Lawn Boy mowers with D-Series and F-Series engines that have the 1/4 turn plastic shut-off levers. Some examples are pictured to the right.
These valves are integrated into the plastic fuel tank. There is a metal clip, thin washer, the plastic lever and this seal. I have found this is the only part that needs to be replaced, see the picture.
You may find you cannot shut off the fuel to the carburetor or you have fuel leaks from the tank externally or both. In my own experience, I have tried all the fixes suggested on the internet and various forums: flipping the seal over; bending the metal retaining clip for more pressure; boiling the seal in water or various concoctions of boiled linseed oil and your favorite penetrating oil, soaking it, adding another home-made gasket, etc..... I have never had any of these fixes work!
So, I decided to make a replacement seal and of course these were not cheap. They are made of premium Vitom material to precise dimensions. I have tested them to be sure they will work.
